Surface Texture Parameters According to ISO 21920 in Practice
HOMMEL ETAMIC, a leading manufacturer of measuring systems, offers a wide-ranging collection of measuring solutions for industrial manufacturing processes. Our technologies consist of the pneumatic, tactile and optical measurement of roughness, contour, shape and dimensional characteristics, as well as optical inspection of finished surfaces.
The measuring systems ensure the quality of the workpiece throughout every stage of the production process by delivering accurate measurement data in a short time. Whether it's an in-line, off-line or a 100 % control of all parts produced – automated metrology increases the overall productivity of the production process through efficiently designed inspection solutions.
We offer solutions for various tasks in surface texture measurement. Our range includes mobile surface measuring instruments, stationary measuring systems for manual and automated roughness, contour, topography, or twist measurement, as well as combined systems for roughness and contour measurements according to ISO 21920 series of standards. We also offer measuring stations tailored to meeting your specific measuring requirements.
Surface texture measurement according to ISO 21290 series of standards
The texture of a surface is an important factor in ensuring high quality parts. To achieve this, it is essential that it is precisely defined by means of standardized surface texture parameters.
The ISO 21920 series of standards has been in force since 2022 and defines the parameters of roughness metrology more clearly. Parameters are mainly calculated directly for the entire evaluation length. In addition to the known roughness parameters new ones have been defined and some existing parameters have been given new names.
This sometimes results in differences between the old parameters according to ISO 4287 or ISO 13565 and new parameters according to ISO 21920. The latter will replace the previous roughness metrology standards after a transition period.
Specifications according to ISO 21920
The ISO 21920 series of standards precisely defines revised terms, guidelines, and parameters for effective surface evaluation, such as
- Surface profiles
- P, R and W parameters
- Traverse and evaluation lengths
- Filter types
- Measurement conditions
- Tolerance limits and acceptance rules
- Drawing entries
